Man in Custody After Fellow Worker Killed at Deerfield Beach Construction Site: BSO

One man is in custody after he killed a fellow worker at a construction site in Deerfield Beach Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The incident happened on the second floor of the construction site at 700 West Hillsboro Boulevard shortly before 9 a.m., Broward Sheriff's Office officials said.

Officials said 32-year-old Jonathan Schuler assaulted Arcenio Alvarez with a crowbar at the site.

Alvarez, 32, was rushed to Broward Health North where he later died.

Witnesses said they saw the suspect hit the victim in the head several times with a crowbar. The suspect then slid down the garbage chute but workers chased him down and held him until deputies arrived, the witnesses said.

Officials said they're trying to determine what led to the seemingly unprovoked attack.

Both men worked at the site but for different companies, officials said. Alvarez was an employee of N&P Demolition, a subcontractor on the site, and Schuler was a day laborer who was contracted only for the day.

Schuler had an elevated heart rate and was also taken to the hospital. He was being questioned by homicide investigators and it's unknown what charges he may face.
