Man Sentenced To Life In Prison For Killing Pregnant Girlfriend

A Broward County judge handed down the mandatory sentence Thursday for 20-year-old Edward Jermaine Babbs

A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his girlfriend and unborn son.

A Broward County judge handed down the mandatory sentence Thursday for 20-year-old Edward Jermaine Babbs. He was convicted in January of first-degree murder. He was ineligible for the death penalty, because he was 17 at the time of the shooting.

Authorities say Babbs was with 17-year-old Stephanie Rabsatt in a grocery store parking lot in October 2009. They were sitting in a vehicle when prosecutors say Babbs shot Rabsatt in the stomach and in the back of the head.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that since Babbs was underage at the time of the murder, a case being considered by the U.S. Supreme Court might cause his life sentence to be thrown out.
