A man is dead after police say he punched a Plantation Police officer, prompting police to use a Taser and shoot the man to subdue him.
Police say the confrontation happened around 8:48 p.m. Sunday at a medical complex building. The man, in his 50s, was reportedly hanging out at the building when an officer on duty spotted him.
"He (the officer) confronted the individual behind the building, asked him to leave or told him that he couldn't hang out back there. And for whatever reason, the subject struck the officer in the face," said Detective Philip Toman of Plantation Police.
The officer tried using a Taser to subdue the man, but that proved to be ineffective, so the officer fired at the man several times.
Both the officer and the man were transported to the hospital. The man was taken to Broward Health Medical Center trauma unit. He later died as a result of his injuries.
The officer sustained facial injuries as a result of the punch. He was hospitalized and has since been released.
Police identified the officer as Erik Carlton, who has been with the agency since 2001. The man who was shot wasn't identified but police said he had an extensive arrest record and had an active warrant.
