Man Shot His Father-In-Law, Estranged Wife in Coral Springs: Cops

He was arrested and faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Authorities identified the man they say shot his father-in-law and estranged wife near their 4-year-old son in Coral Springs.

Police said Thomas Maffei, 45, of Parkland, shot his family Friday night on the 10500 block of Sample Road. He was arrested and faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to online jail records.

Police responded to the Barrington Club after reports of gunshots at the apartment complex. When they arrived, authorities said they saw a man exit the home and then quickly return inside.

Shortly after, 40-year-old Katherine Maffei, suffering from a gunshot wound, exited the home and fell to the ground. She was followed by her father, 67-year-old Robert Ranta, who carried his daughter's 4-year-old son. Ranta, also suffering from a gunshot wound, collapsed next to his daughter.

Coral Springs Police moved all three to safety and then arrested Thomas Maffei. He also faces charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed burglary, false imprisonment and child abuse, police said.

Katherine Maffei and her father were transported to Broward Health North in serious condition. Authorities said Katherine and Thomas Maffei were separated and going through a divorce at the time of the incident.
