Man Survives Explosion at Miami Shores Home

An apparent gas explosion rocks home, man survives blast.

A Miami Shores man is safe after an apparent gas explosion rocked his home early Friday morning.

Kenny Kotalik said the blast woke him up in his bed at about 4:00 a.m. at his home at 950 Northeast 100th Street.

"I thought like either a plane hit the house or...it was a tremendous explosion," Kotalik said.

Kotalik said the blast blew tiles off the bathroom walls just a few feet away from him and tore off two garage doors and sparked flames.

"It blew up and out," Kotalik explained, examining the damage to his garage. He said he was able to put out the flames within a few minutes. "I'm lucky to be alive."

Kotalik shares the home with his wife, who was not home. He said sometimes his 6-year-old son sleeps in the room with him, but that was not the case this time.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews are trying to figure out what caused the explosion.
