Victim in critical condition, driver in custody after early morning crash

A man is in critical condition after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the street in his wheelchair in Lauderhill Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. in the area of Northwest 56th Avenue and Inverrary Boulevard, Lauderhill Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Jerry Gonzalez said.

The driver of the car, a black Ford Taurus, fled the scene and a "Be On The Lookout" was issued, Lauderhill Police spokesman Lt. Greg Solowsky said.

Police found the driver about two and a half miles away in the 7900 block of Northwest 44th Street and took him into custody, Solowsky said.

The man in the wheelchair was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where he's in critical condition, Gonzalez said.

Neither the driver or victim has been identified. It's unknown whether the driver will be charged.
