After being nursed back to health following a possible boat strike, one South Florida manatee is being released back into the open waters after getting a clean bill of health.
Officials from Miami Seaquarium and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission joined with the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership on Tuesday to released Commandyr back into the water after spending three months rehabilitating.
Officials say the sea cow was found in November 2017 in Key Largo thin and floating with boat strike marks on his back and a fractured rib. Medical treatment returned him back to form, weighing over 1,000 pounds and being able to swim at all levels of water.
Commandyr will be returned to the waters in the Upper Keys were he was found.
