Man's Leg Severed After Being Hit By Metrorail

Douglas Road Metrorail Station has been shut down

A man has been rescued after being pinned under a Metrorail train Thursday afternoon just before the start of rush hour traffic.

Rescuers had to amputate one of the man's legs below the knee to pull him from under the train. Police think it may have been a botched suicide attempt.

The incident happened at the Douglas Road Metrorail Station around 3 p.m. Witnesses said they saw the man waiting at the edge of the platform as the train approached. Then he jumped in front of it.

The 47-year-old man has been transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, but his condition is unknown.

The Metrorail station has been shut down in both directions while police investigate what happened and county officials are setting up a bus shuttle service to ferry passengers around downtown.
