What follows is a detailed timeline covering the 6 minutes and 40 seconds Nikolas Cruz spent inside Building 1200 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018.
It is based on the animation released Tuesday by the Broward Sheriff’s Office and other police and fire records and public statements. While some times may be off by a few seconds, it is the best publicly available information at this point.
The names of the victims – including those whose locations when they were killed are known -- are omitted because the locations of all the victims is not publicly known.
Some of the more notable time frames revealed below:
- The elapsed time from his first shot at 2:21:33 to the last shot that struck a victim at 2:25:18: 3 minutes, 45 seconds.
- His shooting on the first floor - where he killed 11 and injured 13 – lasted 1 minute, 53 seconds.
- His time on second floor, where no one was shot: 44 seconds.
- His elasped time shooting people on the third floor - where 6 were killed and 4 injured: 45 seconds.
- After killing 17 and wounding 17, he spent two minutes in the faculty lounge with his rifle (which he reloaded at least once there) and a bipod, which he planned to use as a sniper, police say, but was thwarted by the thick glass he shot through.
- Other than school resource deputy Scot Peterson, it is unlikley any of the other responding deputies could have entered the 1200 building and confronted Cruz before he shot his last victim.
