Inside the gym at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Saturday, hundreds of high schoolers, college students, and alumni were standing for those who couldn’t.

A five hour dance marathon was originally scheduled for February 21st, but the mass shooting on Valentine’s Day changed everything - including the event’s mission.

“We were really excited about it before the tragedy happened, but after it happened it really gave us more of a reason to stand for not only kids fighting in the hospitals every day, but to stand for Eagles that have fallen that we do miss very much,” said senior Angelique Meneses.

The idea was to stand for five hours straight dancing, singing, and listening to personal stories from families who depend on hospitals connected to the Children’s Miracle Network.

“Everyone showed up today because they want to do this and they want to forward and continue to honor those who can’t be standing here,” said Brittany Sinitch, an English and drama teacher who helped organize the event and is also a graduate of MSD.

The goal was to raise $12,000, but these dancers surpassed that goal and raised over $66,000 – in part because MSD’s student government association has pledged to match up to $10,000.

All proceeds directly to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami.
