Marlins Eliminated From Division Race With Blowout Loss

The Marlins were mathematically eliminated from division title contention on Saturday

The Miami Marlins will go another year without winning their division following an 8-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

The loss officially eliminated Miami from contending for the division title. The Marlins have never won the National League East and will need to wait until 2017 to try again. Miami remains mathematically alive in the Wild-Card race, but with a very small chance of achieving that goal.

Jose Urena allowed seven runs in only two innings to move to 4-7 on the season. It was an effort that looked nothing like Urena's last start. In his last turn, Urena nearly threw a complete game for Miami. In this loss, Urena allowed seven hits and walked two more.

The bullpen would go on to combine for six innings of one-run ball, but Miami's offense never got going. The Marlins managed only three hits and only one of them was for extra bases. Derek Dietrich doubled for the 19th time this season and was stranded on the bases.

The Marlins went 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base in the game. Christian Yelich personally grounded into two double plays to end potential rallies for the team. Yelich was responsible for leaving three men on base as part of an 0-2 day. Manager Don Mattingly went to his bench early in the game due to the lopsided score.

Andew Cashner will start for Miami in the series finale on Sunday.
