Marlins Fall to Nationals in Extra Innings

The Marlins had their three-game win streak come to an end on Friday in Washington, D.C.

The Miami Marlins were unable to keep their winning streak going as they lost to the Washington Nationals 5-4 in ten innings on Friday.

Coming into the game, Miami had won three games in a row and owned one of the best records in baseball this month. Even with the loss, the Marlins are still 11-5 in September and are looking to end a poor season a high note. The recent surge of wins has given Miami a firm hold of third place in the division.

Jose Fernandez started the game and came away with a no-decision. The Marlins' ace struck out eight in 5.2 innings. Fernandez was lifted due to his pitch count with one out remaining in the sixth. As Miami is out of contention, the team is playing it safe with Fernandez. The right-hander allowed five hits, two walks and a pair of runs.

Jose Urena entered the game with Miami ahead by a run and quickly turned that around. When Urena left the mound two outs later, Washington was on top by one. The rookie allowed two runs in his short time on the mound which featured a pair of walks and also a pair of hits.

After his team tied the game to send it to extras, Brian Ellington had a tough outing. The reliever gave up a lead-off double to Jayson Werth, and he ended up scoring the winning run. The inning featured a pair of intentional walks, and a close play at the end on a sacrifice fly.

Catcher J.T. Realmuto had a rough game behind the plate. Not only did the rookie catcher drop the final throw of the game, but he was charged with a passed ball as well. Fernandez was tagged with two wild pitches while Urena threw one as well. It is possible that Realmuto could have stopped at least one of these errant pitches.

Christian Yelich started off the game fast with his seventh home run of the season in the first inning. The blast was of the two-run variety, and was one of two hits on the day for the left fielder.

Justin Nicolino will be on the mound for the Marlins on Saturday as they look to start a new winning streak.
