Marlins Fall to Nationals in Lopsided Loss

The Marlins were unable to pick up a series win after a decisive 7-2 loss to the Nats

The Miami Marlins had a busy day off the field and a lackluster day on it as they fell to the Washington Nationals 7-2 on Wednesday.

While the front office worked the phones as part of a blockbuster trade, the Marlins took the field with a lot of uncertainty. Mat Latos and Michael Morse were the talk of baseball all day in a trade that appeared to be consummated early on. After a flurry of rumors, both players spent the game in the dugout in their Marlins uniforms.

A rumored three-team trade involving the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves was discussed in great detail during Miami's television broadcast. It was known that Miami would be selling pieces and the only remaining question was which talent would come back to the Marlins.

Tom Koehler took the mound and tried to focus on the game instead of his departing teammates. It was not the best of starts for Koehler as he allowed five runs in six innings of work. The right-hander struck out four, walked one and allowed six hits along the way. Koehler now has a 3.38 E.R.A this season.

Sam Dyson worked the next two innings and did not fare any better. Dyson allowed two runs of his own to help put the game out of reach. With Steve Cishek off the roster, Dyson will likely see increased opportunities in close games.

Miami only managed four hits in this game and just one of those was an extra-base hit. Ichiro Suzuki collected his fourth double of the year as part of a two-hit day. The other two singles were tallied by Martin Prado and Adeiny Hechavarria.

The Marlins will take on the Nationals in the rubber game on Thursday with Dan Haren scheduled to start.
