Marlins Hit Into Six Double Plays in Loss to Padres

The Marlins hit into six double plays in their 3-1 loss to the Padres on Sunday

The Miami Marlins hit into six rally-killing double plays in their 3-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

Miami had plenty of chances to get runs on the board, but put an end to those opportunities quickly. The six double plays were a season-high for the Marlins and resulted in a series loss to San Diego. With Miami trying to hang in the Wild Card race, the lowly Padres played the spoiler role well in the series.

Four of Miami's double plays were on the ground and the last one came on a line drive back to the pitcher. Grounding into double plays in the loss were Martin Prado, Dee Gordon, Miguel Rojas, Christian Yelich and Jeff Francoeur. Gordon despite his speed was on the back-end of one of the early double plays.

Justin Nicolino was brought up from AAA for the emergency start after Andrew Cashner was scratched due to a blister. Nicolino pitched decently but was let down by his offense. The lefty had a quality start in which he allowed three runs in six innings. Nicolino walked one and allowed eight hits while taking the loss.

Miami's lone run was knocked in by Xavier Scruggs. The first baseman had a good day for the Marlins with two hits and a walk. One of those hits was a double which was the first of the season for Scruggs.

J.T. Realmuto also doubled in the game as part of a two-hit day. Miami's starting catcher now has 26 runs batted in this season.

The Marlins will next head to New York for a series with the Mets. Jose Fernandez will make the start for Miami in the series opening game on Monday at Citi Field.
