Marlins Lose Fifth Straight

The Marlins dropped a fifth consecutive game on Tuesday against the Phillies

The Miami Marlins fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 on Tuesday to extend their skid to five games.

Miami has now lost five games in a row and ten of its last 11 overall. The losing streak has all but knocked the Marlins out of playoff contention. Even though Miami remains mathematically alive, its chances of reaching the postseason are slim.

The Marlins are now three games under .500 and trail several times in the Wild Card race. For a realistic opportunity of playing in baseball's second season, the Marlins would likely have to go on an extended winning streak. In addition, the Marlins would need assistance from other teams.

Giancarlo Stanton made an appearance as a pinch-hitter after being activated prior to the game. Stanton picked up a single before being lifted for a pinch-runner. Stanton will be used as a pinch-hitter exclusively for the foreseeable future.

Justin Bour also appeared as a pinch-hitter in his first game back on the roster. Bour walked after being activated prior to the game. The first baseman could see time in the field in the near future as well.

Ichiro Suzuki hit his first home run of the season in the eighth inning to reduce the deficit from three runs to one run. It was the first pinch-hit home run of Suzuki's career.

Jose Urena lasted only five innings after making the start in this one. Urena allowed four runs on seven hits and also walked one.

Andrew Cashner will start on Wednesday as the Marlins look to avoid a sweep.
