Marlins Open Second Half With Loss

The Marlins wasted a strong effort from Jose Fernandez on Friday in their 6-3 loss

The Miami Marlins got their second half off to a bad start on Friday with a 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jose Fernandez looked strong and dominant in the first five innings of the game. The ace faltered in the sixth where he allowed two runs. With his pitch count only at 70, Fernandez was lifted for a pinch-hitter during the seventh inning. Manager Dan Jennings made the move in a spot where Miami could have taken the lead.

In his six innings, Fernandez allowed two runs on four hits and struck out six. The right-hander walked his first batter of the season, and that was his only free pass of the game. With a no-decision in this one, Fernandez is 2-0 with a 2.37 E.R.A through three starts.

The bullpen let the game get out of hand when they were given the ball with a 2-2 tie. Bryan Morris allowed a pair of runs before Carter Capps and Mike Dunn each allowed one run of their own.

During the eighth inning rally by Philadelphia, Cole Gillespie made a critical error in the center field. Gillespie overran a fly-ball which led to the go-ahead run scoring. From there, the Phillies added on three additional runs to put the game out of reach.

Before his blunder in the eighth inning, Gillespie knocked in a run with a double. It was his sixth double of the season, and lifted his season average to .342. Gillespie has five runs batted in during this stint in the big leagues.

J.T. Realmuto hit a home run in the ninth inning to close the gap to three. It was Realmuto's fifth blast of the year.

The Marlins will try and rebound from this loss on Saturday when they give the ball to Tom Koehler.
