Marlins Tally 16 Hits to Complete Series Win

The Marlins went into St. Louis and took 2 of 3 from the defending NL Champions

The Miami Marlins completed a series win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday with their 8-4 victory.

Going into the sixth inning, the Marlins held a 1-0 lead but that was expanded to 4-0 with three runs in the frame. In the eighth inning, Miami added on some more with an additional four runs. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a three-run home run in that eighth inning, the ninth long ball of the year for the catcher.

Casey McGehee who is an All-Star Game hopeful extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a two-hit day. McGehee also added a run batted in to give him 53 on the year. It remains to be seen if the third baseman will be a member of the NL roster at the Midsummer Classic, but he is certainly under consideration.

Henderson Alvarez didn't only have a big day on the mound as he also added three hits at the plate with a run scored. All told Miami had 16 hits in the game and saw multi-hit days from two-thirds of the starting lineup.

Alvarez added to his All-Star Game résumé with seven strong innings that earned him his sixth win of the season. Alvarez allowed only one run on five hits while walking one and striking out three. The run came in the seventh inning on a solo home-run, a rare blast given up by the right-hander this year.

The All-Star Game rosters are set to be announced on Sunday evening and Alvarez has done everything he could do to be in the discussion. For the year, Alvarez is now 6-3 with a 2.27 E.R.A and has filled in admirably as the ace of the staff since Jose Fernandez was shut down for the season.

In the bottom of the eighth, Kevin Gregg took over and gave up two runs in his two-thirds of an inning of work. Dan Jennings was brought in to finish off the inning and keep the lead at five for Miami.

In the ninth, Jennings stayed in and gave up hits to the first two batters of the inning. The second hit brought home the fourth run of the game for the Cardinals. Chris Hatcher was then brought on with a runner on second and nobody out. The reliever worked out of it without any further damage and prevented a need for closer Steve Cishek to enter.

Miami will begin a series in Arizona on Monday with Tom Koehler scheduled to start as the Marlins try for their third straight win.
