Miami Beach Gay Pride Makes Scholarship Donation to Point Foundation

The Miami Beach Gay Pride organization has donated $7,500 to the Point Foundation, a national scholarship fund that helps LGBTQ students in their academic and leadership goals.

The Point Foundation is the United States' largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBT students of merit, the groups said in a joint statement. Miami Beach Gay Pride made the donation during a VIP reception on Saturday at a private Miami Beach residence.

“Miami Beach Gay Pride is all about celebrating community,” Mark Fernandes, chair of the Pride board of directors, said. “In alignment with that mission is the commitment to give back to the community and we are proud to be able to do so by contributing to the scholarship program at Point Foundation. By fostering education, we help cultivate the next generation of LGBTQ individuals.”

Miami Beach Gay Pride describes itself as an organization that unites the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, along with their friends, allies and supporters.

The Point Foundation non-profit has awarded about 400 scholarships since 2002.

“A truly proud and strong community is one that invests in helping its young people reach their potential,” Jorge Valencia, Point Foundation's executive director and chief executive officer said. “Miami Beach Gay Pride’s generous support of Point’s scholarships and programs sends a message to LGBTQ youth that their community cares about them and about creating a better future for all.”
