The City of Miami Beach has unanimously passed an amendment that will require beachfront concession operators to only use reusable products.
In a statement, Mayor Dan Gelber says the legislation is a step towards phasing out single-use plastics from Miami Beach, and replacing them with recyclable alternatives.
"Single-use plastic is neither readily recyclable nor biodegradable and takes hundreds of years to degrade in the environment," Gelber says.
According to the city, there will be a one year educational period for businesses to learn how to follow the amendment. The law will be fully implemented by October 2020.
