Miami Beach Police Department Veteran Dies After Medical Emergency

The Miami Beach police detective who died after suffering a medical emergency while on duty Wednesday morning was a 28-year veteran of the department.

Rescue crews arrived at the building located off 11th Street and Washington Avenue just after 11 a.m. after reports of an officer needing assistance.

Det. Larry E. Marrero was rushed to Mount Sinai Medical Center and later passed away, the Miami Beach Police Department confirmed in a news release.

His cause of death was not immediately known.

Marrero, described as a decorated officer, was working as a background investigator before his death. He worked in a variety of roles, including in patrol, marine patrol, as a school resource officer, an auto-theft investigation and as a homicide detective. He was also a 20-year member of the department's SWAT team.

"Detective Marrero was a consummate professional who always excelled in his assignments," the department said in a release. "Revered as a leader among his peers and supervisors alike, Larry will be truly missed."
