Miami Beach's Urban Beach Weekend Ends With Way Fewer Arrests

Miami Beach's Urban Beach Weekend ended with nearly 200 fewer arrests than last year, police officials said Tuesday.

A total of 225 arrests were made during the event, which began Thursday and ended on Memorial Day. Of those arrests, 51 were for felonies, according to the numbers released by Miami Beach Police Tuesday. Last year, 414 arrests were made, including 73 felonies.

Most of the 2014 arrests were for assaults, batteries, and drugs, police said.

The annual event brings thousands to Miami Beach but this year, for the first time, Miami Beach Police unleashed a brand new mobile command center. The center was strategically positioned at 5th and Ocean. Barricades and new traffic routes also went into effect to control crowds and officers on bikes, golf carts and motorcycles were out in full force.
