What to Know

  • Commissioners voted on a proposal by Mayor Francis Suarez to eliminate the program, approving the measure during their Thursday meeting.

Taking up an issue that has passionate support on both sides, the city of Miami decided Thursday to end the red light camera program aimed at punishing those who run lights at various intersections.

City Commissioners voted on a proposal by Mayor Francis Suarez to eliminate the program, approving the measure during their meeting.

Suarez later tweeted a message to followers expressing pleasure in the decision, saying it was “necessary to defend Miami’s most vulnerable residents from continuing to be overburdened by these excessive fines.”

Proponents of the lights have argued they help prevent crashes and fatalities caused by people running the lights, while some opponents have argued that the lights have created more incidents with drivers increasing their speed in an effort to make it through an intersection before the light turns red.
