Miami Coast Guard Crew in $55 Million Coke Bust

Speed boat packed with cocaine, four men arrested

A Miami Coast Guard unit hit the cocaine motherlode, helping to haul in $55 million worth of the powerful powder from a speed boat off the coast of Venezuela.

The crew, working with the British Navy aboard Frigate HMS Iron Duke, spotted the boat during a routine patrol in the Caribbean sea last Thursday, according to the Coast Guard.

They decided to check out the stopped boat when they saw people throwing packages over its side, dispatching a helicopter and boarding crew.

The boat was boarded, and the packages, 36 in all, were recovered. They were stuffed with about $55 million in nose candy, according to the Coast Guard.

Four men were arrested by the crew.

"This is an outstanding example of the partnership between the U.S. and our regional and NATO colleagues to stem the flow of illegal narcotics to Europe and North America," said Captain Steven A. Banks, with the U.S. Coast Guard.
