Miami-Dade, Broward Students Get Free Meals As Hurricane Irma Cleanup Continues

One cost that parents in Florida will not have to worry about as students return to classes as Hurricane Irma recovery continues: school lunch.

All public school students in the 48 counties affected by Irma will enjoy free school meals through Oct. 20, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The meals, provided by the USDA’s National School Lunch Program, will potentially feed 2.5 million children in more than 3,000 schools across the state.

"Florida is currently reporting shortages of certain food products, so these sensible and timely flexibilities will ensure children receive the assistance needed," said USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue.

The USDA also granted schools the flexibility to operate the Summer Meals Program for unanticipated school closures during the school year.

Miami-Dade and Broward school officials announced Sunday that power and air conditioning had been restored in all schools, and classes will resume Monday morning.
