Video Released of Commissioner's DUI Arrest in Key West

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz was arrested on a DUI charge in Key West Saturday night, authorities said.

Diaz, 55, was arrested on Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe County Sheriff's Office records showed.

Diaz was booked into jail and bonded out later Sunday.

"Under advice of my legal counsel, I cannot discuss details at this time. However, I look forward to resolving this matter," Diaz said in a statement. "In the meantime, I will continue to serve my community and the residents of District 12 as I have done for the last 24 years and I humbly ask for your patience during this time."

Key West police said Diaz was arrested after he stopped his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and it fell down because he failed to put the kick stand down.

Diaz reportedly was doing 74 mph in a 30 mph speed zone before he was stopped.

In newly-released officer body camera video, during the traffic stop, Diaz said he didn't have his driver license with him, but identified himself as a commissioner and said to call the sheriff because he knows him.

Police said they placed him in handcuffs after he failed field sobriety tests, which included swaying during an eye test and losing his balance while trying to walk a straight line.

"There's a very strong odor of alcohol coming off your breath. You have no business riding a motorcycle this evening, none whatsoever," an officer said in the video.

Diaz was elected to the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners in September 2002. He was reelected in August 2014. He has championed efforts to create safer roads for bicyclists, and has ridden motorcycles for years.

Diaz held a brief press conference on Monday, and apologized to his family and friends. He said the officers acted in the most professional way, and then said his attorney advised him to say no more.

There has been no comment so far from Miami-Dade County officials.
