Miami-Dade Jail's Medical Director, Doctor Resign

Patrick Morse and Dr. Calixto Calderon resign following rash of inmate deaths

The director and the doctor in charge of medical services for the Miami-Dade system resigned following a rash of inmate deaths.

The Miami Herald reports Patrick Morse and Dr. Calixto Calderon submitted their letters of resignation on Tuesday. They worked for the corrections arm of Jackson Health System, which oversees medical services at the jail. Jackson officials didn't say whether the men left under pressure.

A mentally ill inmate died in July. Another inmate died in the psychiatric ward. In an affidavit, a jail nurse complained about dangerous practices in the medical unit.

In a letter to Jackson's board of trustees on Wednesday, CEO Officer Carlos Migoya noted that "important challenges remain." He says the hospital is "in the midst of a detailed review of operating procedures."
