A man was arrested Tuesday on an animal cruelty charge after he allegedly stabbed a dog in the head in a northwest Miami-Dade neighborhood, police said.
According to an arrest report, the dog's owner told police that 40-year-old Marshall Lebaron Land was taunting the animal with his book bag before he stabbed him.
Land told officers that the dog runs to the gate and tries to hop over the fence every time he walks home from the park.
Officers said in the arrest report that the dog had a laceration on the top of its skull, and that the dog was within a yard with a fence all the way around the property and had no way to get out.
Land faced a felony charge of animal cruelty with intent to injure or kill with a deadly weapon, according to jail records.
Prosecutors in court Wednesday said Land has a lengthy criminal record and asked the judge to increase his bond to $50,000, but the judge kept his bond at $7,500 and also ordered Land to stay away from the dog and its owner.
