Miami-Dade Mom Charged With Abusing Baby: Police

A South Florida mother is accused of abusing her 10-month-old daughter, leaving the baby girl with multiple fractures, broken bones and bleeding in the brain, according to Miami-Dade Police.

April Fox, 31, is being charged with child abuse, aggravated battery and great bodily harm. She was arrested and booked Monday, and appeared in court Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, Fox's daughter was admitted to Jackson Memorial Hospital on May 30th where doctors noted that the baby had suffered multiple skull fractures and broken bones.

The Facebook page for Fox includes photos of her little girl as an infant. At the time Fox called her "my beautiful new love."

Now the baby is being treated for skull fractures and a brain bleed.

Doctors also noted that the baby girl had additional fractures to her arm and one leg that were at different stages of healing, a police report says.

Fox was the baby's sole caretaker at the time the injuries were sustained, police say. Fox denied inflicting the injuries.

Neighbors said Fox shares a home with her boyfriend near Northwest 77th Street and 14th Place in Northwest Miami-Dade.

A baby chair sits on the front porch. Neighbors are stunned.

"For a mother who birthed a child to at her child like that, what? That is catastrophic to me, just appalling," said Ederick Johnson.

Fox has been ordered held on a $10,000 bond. A judge issued a stay away order barring Fox from contacting the child.

The baby was removed from the home and was placed in a shelter, according to the Department of Children and Families. The agency has no history with the family but now has an open case involving the mother, officials said.

Her two other children have been removed from her home and are in a shelter.

NBC 6's Marissa Bagg spoke to Fox's brother who said the family is stunned, and that he didn't think his sister was capable of this.

Jail records did not indicate whether Fox has hired an attorney.
