Miami-Dade Murder Suspect Caught in Connecticut

A man accused of bludgeoning his elderly caregiver in Miami-Dade in 2013 has been captured in Connecticut, officials said Monday.

Danei Washington Gordon, 21, was captured lat Wednesday in Hartford by the U.S. Marshals fugitive task force. He is awaiting extradition to Miami and it's unknown if he's hired an attorney.

Miami-Dade Police issued an arrest warrant for Gordon in July 2013 on a second-degree murder charge in the death of 73-year-old Neville Smith.

Authorities said Gordon used a metal cooking pot to bludgeon Smith in the kitchen of Smith's Miami-Dade home on April 5, 2013. Gordon had been staying in the home at the time of the alleged murder, police said.

When the arrest warrant was issued, it's believed Gordon, a Jamaican national whose legal status in the U.S. hasn't been confirmed, had already fled South Florida. Last year, investigators sent leads to Jamaica, Orlando and Hartford.

Investigators were able to determine Gordon was hiding in the Hartford area and deputy marshals began a surveillance operation on the north side of Hartford, which has a large Jamaican population, authorities said.

When Gordon was spotted riding a bicycle in the area, he was taken into custody. He repeatedly gave a fake name but had a tattoo of his name, "Danei," on his body, authorities said.
