Miami-Dade Officials Want to Help You See a Doc

There's still time for families with low to moderate incomes to qualify for health care cost assistance.

Some 600,000 people in Miami-Dade are not able to afford private health insurance and do not qualify for public programs like Medicaid. It's why county officials are stepping in to meet the need.

If you don't have health insurance, finding an affordable plan that fits your needs can be a pain. It's why the county is partnering to help.

"In the county, nearly 30 percent of our residents are without health insurance," said Janet Perkins.

So Miami-Dade partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield to offer low cost health insurance to people who live or work in the county. Based on income and household size, the county offers low health care premiums. Now, new this month, the county is taking it a step further, helping people with financial need pay those insurance premiums.

Depending on your age, sex, and health status, you could receive anywhere from $25 to $150 per month to subtract from your insurance costs.

"We’re not only trying to get people insured, were trying to get them into medical homes, places in our community where they can get comprehensive care, where they enter a system with a private care doctor and they're aided in receiving specialty care, diagnostic services and in-patient when needed," Perkins said.

Miami-Dade will help up to 500 people with insurance premium assistance.

The county is accepting applications now through October. Click here to find out how to apply.
