After Shooting at Officer, Cross-County Chase Suspect Shoots Himself: Miami-Dade Police

The Miami-Dade Police Department said the suspect involved in a cross-county chase who fled after shooting at an officer apparently shot himself.

The incident began in Florida City with a crash in which injuries occurred at SW 33th Street and U.S. 1.

The suspect fled from the scene but an MDPD officer witnessed the crash.

The suspect has been identified as Michael Sardinas, 29, who appears to be registered as a sex offender.

"As the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver fired several shots at the officer and continued fleeing northbound on the Florida Turnpike," MDPD said in a statement. "The vehicle came to a final stop at approximately mile marker 127. As the officers approached the vehicle, they discovered the subject suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound."

The condition of the officer who was shot at is not yet known. Police did not confirm the suspect died from his injuries. However, footage from the scene shows a yellow tarp placed atop what appears to be a body.
