Miami-Dade Schools Chief May Have Violated Gift Law

The superintendent of one of the nation's largest school districts appears to have violated Florida's gift laws.

The Florida Commission on Ethics announced Wednesday that it found probable cause that Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho broke the law because he accepted tickets and other gifts that were worth more than $100. Carvalho also did not initially disclose the gifts.

Some of the gifts included neckties and tickets to events featuring Harry Connick Jr. and Kevin Spacey. Carvalho and his wife also went on a two-day cruise benefiting the United Way.

But the commission said it would not take any further action against Carvalho.

They said he had been forthcoming about his actions and had agreed to disclose the gifts.

Carvalho in a filing stated he had acted in good faith and did not believe he had to report them.
