The Miami-Dade School District is taking extra steps to protect students from what has been a bad flu season.

Robo calls advising parents about the availability of free flu shots have been placed and school staff have been instructed to do more cleaning and disinfecting around campus.

"The key important message today is if a child is diagnosed with influenza, if a child demonstrates the symptoms, is exhibiting the symptoms, or an adult, stay home, see a doctor," Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said.

Miami-Dade Schools have seen a slight spike in absences the past few weeks. Overall, Miami-Dade has reported three to four outbreaks in the county.

If your child is showing flu-like symptoms, the school district wants you to keep them home at least 24 hours, and they stress the importance of seeing a doctor.
