The head of Miami-Dade Public County Schools may be considering a run for Congress. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said he is being courted to run for retiring Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s seat.
Carvalho told NBC 6 his potential candidacy does not stem from personal aspiration but “a demand-sided proposition driven by the current popular uneasiness on issues like health care and education.”
Florida's 27th congressional district leans toward Democrats even though Republican Ros-Lehtinen has held the seat for more than three decades. The 52-year-old superintendent is registered to vote with no party affiliation, but describes himself as a social liberal and fiscal conservative. Carvalho is being eyed by both Democrats and Republicans.
Carvalho has served as chief of the school district for nearly 10 years. “My dedication and commitment to Miami-Dade County Public Schools are as strong and unwavering as ever,” said Carvalho.
In the past, the superintendent’s name has been tossed around as a potential candidate for Florida governor and county mayor. It’s unclear when Carvalho will make his final decision on a bid for Congress. “I would be disavowing the trust and confidence of many if I did not at the very least entertain their request for consideration,” said Carvalho.
