Miami-Dade Teacher of the Year Award Announced

Geoffrey Aladro, a history teacher at Frank C. Martin International K-8 Center, was named the 2015 Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year by Miami-Dade Schools, according to the Miami Herald.

Aladro was one of five finalists in contention for the award and took home a brand new car as part of his win along with $4,500 and other prizes.

Aladro’s win was announced at a dinner at the DoubleTree by Hilton Miami Airport & Convention Center. The District and United Teachers of Dade also recognized the 2015 *Rookie* Teacher of the Year, Desiree Amber Chase of MAST @ Homestead, according to the Herald.

There are approximately 20,000 teachers in the county so it's a very competitive and selective process. The finalists are first selected by school and then by area. The Dade County Teacher of the Year award is named after Francisco Walker, a teacher killed on school grounds in 1982.
