Miami Dog Reunited with Owner After Shooting

A German Shepard is back in the arms of his owner Monday and is expected to make a full recovery after police say someone shot the dog intentionally last week.

Early Thursday morning, investigators say two people on bicycles pulled up to the front yard of a home, located in the area of 27th Avenue and Northwest 123 Street in northwest Miami-Dade and fired gunshots at the one-and-a-half year old German Shepard mix named Oso. Bullets grazed Oso's face and shattered his front leg. After several complicated surgeries, veterinarians were forced to amputate one of Oso's legs.

"Even in all the pain that he was, he never tried to bite us," said Dr. Maria Serrano of Miami-Dade Animal Services of the gentle dog. "Whoever did this did it out of pure evil and just to hurt him. It's very important to try and catch somebody who did this because they probably will do it again, and maybe not to an animal but to a person."

Dr. Serrano and Miami-Dade Animal Services have been caring for Oso, and they are seeking any information regarding the shooting.

“Animal Services takes issues of animal cruelty very seriously. We hope that someone will come forward with information that will help bring the individual(s) to justice” said Lorna Mejia, Chief of Shelter Services and Live Release Programs.

Doctors expect Oso to make a full recovery. The shooters, meanwhile, remain on the loose.

Police and animal services are continuing to investigate.
