Miami Dolphins Rookies Revamp Broward Facility for At-Risk Youth

Miami Dolphins’ rookies got their hands dirty Thursday afternoon when they traded their football cleats for a pair of working gloves and shovels.

The newest class of rookies participated in a Rebuilding Together Broward event to revamp the grounds for AMIkids of Greater Fort Lauderdale.

Drenched in sweat and wearing smiles from ear to ear, the rookies gave the kids’ outside lunch area a makeover, resurfaced the basketball court, cleaned up debris, and added mulch around the facility.

“It feels good to be out here working for the community,” said rookie linebacker Raekwon McMillan in a statement. “Now that we are part of the Dolphins family, we’re part of this community.”

The program’s focus is to help at-risk youth grow into responsible and productive adults. Many kids in the program come from really tough neighborhoods, according to case worker Kamari Pasley.

“These kids don’t really have a lot to do outside of school. So to keep them active and keep them busy, it will keep them out of trouble and keep them in the right direction,” said Pasley.

Rebuilding Together Broward Executive Director Robin Martin believes the multi-year partnership with the Miami Dolphins affects the community on various levels.

“There’s so many role models out here today, it’s a lasting impact.”
