Hero Miami Firefighter Killed in Motorcycle Crash

Off-duty firefighter dies in Hollywood accident, had just returned from Haiti rescue trip

An 8-year veteran of Miami Fire Rescue who has just returned from a rescue mission in Haiti was killed late last night after his motorcycle collided with a car in Hollywood.

Firefighter Leslie Luma, 36, part of the Technical Rescue Team at Fire Station 6, was off-duty when the accident occurred around 9 p.m.

The accident happened at the intersection of North State Road 7 and West Park Road, where Luma's motorcycle collided with a Ford Mustang.

Luma was taken to nearby Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a spokesperson with the Miami Fire Department.

The Mustang's driver suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Luma is married with three kids and had just celebrated his 8-year anniversary with the fire department yesterday, according to Fire Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll.

Luma was a member of the Urban Search and Rescue Team Task Force 2 that spent weeks sifting through the rubble of the earthquake aftermath in Haiti.

"We're all just trying to be strong for the family right now, as you can imagine," Carroll said. "We appreciate all the help that Hollywood Fire Department did, Hollywood PD did, and right now we just want the family to know that we're there for them."
