Rivalry Renewed: Florida Knocks Off Miami to Open College Football Season

In front of a packed house inside Orlando's Camping World Stadium and a national television audience, the Miami Hurricanes dropped their 2019 opener to the rival Florida Gators by a score of 24-20.

Miami held a 13-7 lead at the half before Florida scored 10 unanswered points and retook the lead late in the fourth quarter to get their first win in the series since 2008.

In his first game as starting quarterback, redshirt freshman Jarren Williams finished the game with 220 yards on 19 of 29 passing and one touchdown passing and one rushing, but was sacked 10 times.

Before the game, Florida suspended four players, including safety Brad Stewart and defensive tackle Tedarrell Slaton along with receiver Rick Wells and walk-on defensive back Pat Moorer.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, suspended sophomore cornerback DJ Ivey for a "violation of team rules." Ivey and Al Blades Jr. had been listed as co-starters heading into the opener.

Miami drops their season opener for the second straight season to a SEC foe, losing the 2018 debut against LSU as well.

The Hurricanes now have a week off before returing to action September 7th against North Carolina. Florida also will have a bye week before hosting Tennessee-Martin.
