Police discovered a man shot dead in the back of a car that crashed into a tree Thursday in Miami Lakes, and officials are looking for the possible driver of the vehicle.
Police said the incident happened around 7:21 p.m. Thursday. A gray Volkswagen Jetta was traveling southbound on 89th Avenue, when it lost control and crashed into a tree near Northwest 89th Avenue and 146th Street.
People in the area said they heard a crash and went outside. That's when witnesses said they saw someone running away from the scene of the crash.
When police arrived on scene, they thought it was a hit and run. They found a bullet hole in the rearview window and found a man, later identified as 37-year-old Lester Hernandez, dead from a gun shot wound in the backseat.
Police are looking for the driver of the vehicle to come forward to figure out what led to Hernandez's death.
A suspect hasn't been named and a description wasn't available.
Anyone with information on this incident is being urged to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
