Miami Makes Portable Bathrooms a Permanent Fixture in Downtown After Program Success

A temporary program to help deal with the problem of human waste in Miami being left in the street and throughout the area is becoming permanent.

Mayor Tomas Regalado, along with the Downtown Development Authority, announced the “Pit Stop” program that provided portable bathrooms for the homeless in the city to use was such a success that they will stay in operation on a full time basis.

The first permanently staffed restroom will be located near Flagler Ave. and SW 1st Street. The city has not decided where the other two will be located. The temporary bathrooms will remain in place until the first permanent one is completed.

The program started in 2015 after a battle between the city and homeless advocates, who opposed what they called a politically motivated move and “ill-conceived”.

The DDA produced a map of spots throughout the city where human waste was found in an effort to promote the need for the portable bathrooms.

"If we want to be a world class city, we have to act like a world class city," Regalado said during Monday's press conference.

Around 1,000 homeless people reside on the streets of Miami.
