When the Miami Hurricanes host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this Saturday night, it isn’t just the latest chapter in one of college football’s best rivalries from the 1980’s – it could very well be for a spot in this year’s four team playoff system.

With Tuesday’s release of the latest College Football Playoff rankings (Notre Dame at No. 3, Miami at No. 7), many experts see the winner of this game as having an inside shot into making the playoffs this season – which would be a first for either team since the system started in the 2014 season.

The 8-0 Hurricanes haven’t defeated their foes from South Bend since the 1989 season – which was also the last time Notre Dame traveled to South Florida for a game against the ‘Canes. Notre Dame heads into this weekend with an 8-1 record, losing by one point at home to a Georgia team currently ranked No. 1 in the playoff poll.

For Miami, this game will also be a chance to redeem themselves from last year’s loss to the Fighting Irish in South Bend – the last time the Hurricanes lost as they are currently on a 13 game winning streak, the longest in the FBS.

Notre Dame holds a 18-7-1 series lead, and while this will be just the fourth meeting between the teams since their 1990 game, fans and alumni of both schools certainly are eager for this once bitter rivalry to resume – even if it is just for 60 game minutes.
