Miami Police Arrest Driver Accused in Fatal Hit and Run

Miami Police arrested an alleged hit-and-run driver they say was driving under the influence when he struck and killed a pedestrian on Saturday.

The crash happened around 5:15 a.m. in the area of NW 5th Avenue and 54th Street.

Police said a woman was attempting to cross the street when 29-year-old Gustavo Sanchez's white 1987 Oldsmobile crashed into her at a high rate of speed.

The woman was dragged by the car for 85 feet before her body came to rest, according to the arrest report. Police said the impact was so severe that the victim's body was severed in half. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Sanchez fled, prompting authorities to issue a "Be On The Lookout," or BOLO, for the vehicle.

About a half-hour later, a Miami-Dade Police officer spotted the Oldsmobile on NE 163rd Street driving erratically. The officer conducted a traffic stop and observed a smashed windshield and blood on the car.

According to the arrest report, the officer asked Sanchez if he had hit anything or hurt anyone. Sanchez replied that he was just on his way home, the report said.

The officer contacted a dispatcher, who confirmed that Miami Police were searching for a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident.

Police said Sanchez had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and an alcoholic beverage on his breath. Officers noted that two beer cans were in plain view inside the car.

The arrest report said Sanchez made several spontaneous statements to an officer that he had been drinking prior to the crash.

Police arrested Sanchez, charging him with DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a deadly crash.

It is unclear whether Sanchez has an attorney.
