R-Bomb Rally in Miami

High school hopes to quash use of the word "retard"

President Obama caught heat when he jokingly compared his bowling game to the Special Olympics, and now the organization is taking it a step further and attempting to quash the use of the word "retard" in a derogatory way.

The group is holding a youth rally in Miami today called "Spread the Word to End the Word" in the hopes of inhibiting what they call the "offensive use of the R-word."

John C. McGinley And The R-Word

The rally will be held at Miami-Palmetto High School and is being produced by Miami-Palmetto student filmmaker Noah Gray, who made a video for the event.

Special Olympics athletes will be on hand to persuade students to stop the use of the "R-word." Eddie Barbanell who starred in the Johnny Knoxville movie "The Ringer," will share his experiences in being called a "retard."

"Scrubs" actor John C. McGinley, who wore a t-shirt bearing the "Spread the Word" during an appearance on "The Bonnie Hunt Show," isn't expected be in Miami for the rally but he strongly backs the effort.

"Most people don't think of this word as the language of hate, but that's exactly what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual disabilities," McGinley told Hunt.

Over 700 students are expected to attend the event and similar events are being held nationwide.
