Miami To Sue State Corrections Department Over Sex Offenders

Two Miami areas have recently been camps for sexual offenders.

City of Miami commissioners voted to sue the Florida Department of Corrections because of the high number of released sexual offenders that have been living on the streets, The Miami Herald reported.

The unanimous Thursday vote came after two Miami areas became camps for the sexual offenders.

In March 2010, the last of nearly 100 sex offenders were forced to move from under the Julia Tuttle Causeway where they had made a home.

More recently, more than ten sexual offenders have been living on the sidewalk at the intersection on Northeast 79th Street and 10th Avenue in the Shorecrest community. Some said they were told to live there by their probation officers, but the department denies the claim.

β€œWe need to send a message to the state that it’s certainly not a proper act,” Commissioner Marc Sarnoff told the Herald.

But the offenders have limited places to live. A county law says the men cannot live within 2,500 feet of a school or any other area that children are known to congregate.

Police Chief Manuel Orosa and Assistant City Attorney George Wysong have 60 days to draft a solution, the newspaper said.
