Miami Woman Stole State Insurer's Identity: Feds

Miami woman cashed $12,000 in checks meant for Citizens Property Insurance

It's one thing to steal another person's identity, but a Miami woman decided to step her game up and jack the state's property insurance company.

Aylin Hernandez has been arrested and charged with fraud after the woman somehow changed the address of Citizens Property Insurance in order to have checks sent to her Hialeah apartment, the Miami Herald reports.

The scam worked initially for the 23-year-old, who used to work for insurance companies who filed claims with Citizens. Hernandez was able to cash $12,000 worth of check meant for the Jacksonville insurance company.

When federal officials discovered the address change in June, it was thought that no mail had made it to the new address. Citizens said they receive 8,000 pieces of mail per day, including premium payments from customers.

Customers who think their payments may have gone to the wrong address can call 888-685-1555 to check on the status of their mail.
