Miami Commissioner Wants Diaper Changing Stations at All City Facilities

The diaper changing stations will give access to more fathers

Baby changing stations could be installed in men's and women's bathrooms in all City of Miami facilities.

First time father to 1-year-old Briana, Miami Commissioner Frank Carollo realized there weren't many accessible stations for fathers in most of the city's buildings, The Miami Herald reported. He mentioned his concern in a meeting about a year ago, and on Thursday, the issue will be discussed for a fourth time during the commission, the newspaper said.

About 35 city facilities and parks have changing stations in men's bathrooms, and Carollo wants changing stations in all 200 city facilities.

"Briana gave me an awareness of what other families are going through," he told the newspaper.

In December, senior administrators said costs for installation could be up to $80,000, with tables costing $400 each.

During one meeting, Carollo  held up a brochure from a local store that sold the tables for $259.

“I think we worked out a cost,” Alice Bravo, assistant city manager, was quoted by the Herald as saying.

Costs were reduced by by taking more time and using city staff to install the tables.

The city of Miami will spend $45,000 for 165 new diaper-changing stations.

The work is expected to begin after Thursday's vote.
