Man Dies by Suicide to End Armed Baptist Hospital Standoff

The Miami-Dade Police Department said a lockdown was temporarily placed at Baptist Hospital on Saturday.

MDPD said the hospital located at 8900 N. Kendall Drive was locked down due to a man armed with a weapon who took a position outside the hospital by a fountain. He later died by suicide.

"Despite our efforts to communicate with and dissuade him, the adult male shot himself," MDPD said in a statement. "Hospital personnel rushed him inside attempting to save him, but were unsuccessful and has been pronounced deceased (suicide)."

The man has previously been held for psychiatric evaluation under the Baker Act.

"Miami-Dade police has cleared the Baptist Hospital campus," Baptist Hospital said in a statement. "The hospital has returned to normal operations and continues to be open for care including the emergency room. The safety of our patients, visitors and employees are our priority."
