Mikey Brewer Starts Over at New School

Teen burn victim heads to class in West Palm Beach

His parents at his side, teen burn victim Michael Brewer went back to class Wednesday morning, at a new school in a new town.

Brewer was seen walking into Jeaga Middle School in West Palm Beach just before 8 a.m., his first day back since the attack last October that nearly killed him.

The 15-year-old said he was ready to go back to school yesterday during an appearance on the "Today Show."

"I'm excited, can't wait," Brewer said. "I kinda miss school, friends and stuff."

On Oct. 12, 2009, five teens attacked Brewer near his Deerfield Beach home, dousing him with rubbing alcohol before lighting him on fire. Brewer was able to dive into a nearby pool to extinguish the flames, but suffered severe burns on nearly two-thirds of his body.

Three of the teens involved face attempted murder charges for the attack.

Brewer had extensive surgery, including four skin grafts, and suffered breathing complications after the attack, spending months in the hospital and in physical therapy.

Brewer was a student at Deerfield Beach Middle School, the same school attended by teen beating victim Josie Ratley. Afraid for his safety, Brewer moved in with his grandparents in West Palm after the attack, and vowed never to return to his old school.

"That school is terrible, I don't know why I even went to that school," Brewer said Tuesday.
