The key for Republican nominee Mitt Romney in the first presidential debate is to describe how different the country will be if he wins the White House, Florida Senator Marco Rubio said Wednesday.
“I think what’s important for Mitt Romney is to outline how different America will be if he is president,” Rubio told NBC 6 South Florida. “We’re going to have a normal tax code where people now are going to be excited about starting new businesses and growing the businesses they have now. We’re going to have normal regulations where we protect public safety but don’t put people out of business.”
If Romney wins the Nov. 6 election, the U.S. will also have “a pro-America energy policy” that relies more on domestic resources, and “free and fair trade with our trading partners around the world,” Rubio added.
Wednesday night’s debate in Denver is a key opportunity for Romney – who trails President Barack Obama by single digits in national polls and many battleground states – to change the momentum of the campaign and to sway undecided voters.
The three debates are important moments that will help those voters choose their candidate, said Rubio, who was confident that Romney would get a bounce from them.
“What I’m excited about is that tonight, for the first time, the American people will see these two men standing side to side next to each other, without any consultants or media spin – just them telling them who they are and what they will do," he said. "And I’m very optimistic that after we begin that process tonight a growing number of people that don’t know how they’re going to vote are going to decide to vote for Mitt Romney – and some people that may think they’re voting for Barack Obama are going to start changing their minds.”
